Kafr El-Sheikh Museum

๐Ÿ“ Location: Kafr El-Sheikh city, central Delta ย  ยท ย  ๐Ÿบ Focus: Delta archaeology ย  ยท ย  ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Tickets: 220 EGP foreign adults

The newly opened Kafr El-Sheikh Museum brings together the archaeology of one of the least-visited corners of the Egyptian Delta โ€” and it is well worth a stop on any trip to the north. Pride of place goes to finds from Buto (Tell el-Fara'in), one of the most important Predynastic and Early Dynastic cities in the Delta and traditionally the first capital of Lower Egypt before unification with the south around 3100 BC.

The exhibits are arranged across three halls and three thematic axes: Egyptian history in the Delta, the Holy Family's journey through nearby Sakha, and a fascinating third section on the history of medicine, veterinary science and pharmacy in Egypt across the millennia. The single most-prized object is a statue of Horus the Falcon of such fine carving that curators argue it has only one peer โ€” the famous Horus statue in the temple of Edfu.

The town of Fuwa in the same governorate is recognised as Egypt's third "heritage city" after Cairo and Rosetta, and several beautifully tile-decorated objects from its Ottoman mosques are also displayed here.

Visiting

The Delta is the most overlooked part of pharaonic Egypt for visitors โ€” this museum is the easiest way to start correcting that.
